Mount Maunganui

FullSizeRender_1Inching our way out of Auckland on Friday afternoon isn’t the best start to the weekend. Patience paid off and 3+ hours later we were checked into our spacious apartment overlooking Pilot Bay at Westhaven Motel. We had to switch rooms the next day based on what was available when I made the booking a month ago, but the second room was just as nice.

I  could not drink the last time I passed through Tauranga so was looking forward to returning to the Mount Brewing Co. The kind bartender gave me three samples before I settled on the hoppy IPA. Drinks were followed by dinner at the Mexican cafe next door.

We woke to a sunny, windy Saturday morning and walked a few blocks to the base of Mount Maunganui. It was already crawling with people, some eagerly running up and down The Mount, no easy feat. It was a 30-minute trek to the summit. We chose a longer, circuitous return route. When we reached the foot of The Mount a beach rugby game was in full swing.

We ate brunch and returned to the motel just as the rain started. Fine by me. It was a treat to watch Georgetown basketball and college football while Allen went fishing in the wet weather.

Later we met friends for drinks and a delicious dinner at a nondescript, nearly hidden, Japanese eatery. It paid off to have the locals chose the restaurant!
