Kaniwhaniwha: Nikau Loop Walk

Allen’s been fishing in the Kaniwhaniwha stream all season. With the promise of a hike, I agreed to join him. The 7km Nikau Loop follows the stream through native forest. With minimal change in elevation this was a walk in the park instead of a workout. The highlight was a 20-metre limestone cave. You need a torch and ease in small spaces to wiggle your way through. (Tip: Leave your bag at the start since the path in the cave loops back to the entrance.)

The hike starts and ends at a large grassy field along the gently flowing stream. I enjoyed a solo picnic and reading in the sun while Allen fished for trout upstream.
